Evaluation

I enjoyed making a short film in what ever style i wanted and learning about the history of punk. From the beginning of the project i was interested from filming from my point of view but i didnt have a subject in mind. Once i had chosen to film my point on my motorcycle, the next step was to try and film on a sunny day when all the other bikers are out so i could get there reactions. For some reason this was quite hard to do. On the two days i went out riding for footage there was only a couple of people on bikes I'm assuming because they were such sunny days most of the bikers went touring or went to places like the beach with their families.

If i had to do this project again i would most definitely learn how to use Premiere Pro more and try to use colour correction and effects. Also i wouldnt leave editing my film for the last day of hand in because i got the dates mixed up. I would also probably choose to make a film maybe with a story and use my canon 650d a bit more to make the film look a bit more professional.

Overall i wasnt really happy with my production or my final outcome because i left it all to the last minute witch i would not do again. But at the same time i really enjoyed the overall project. Coming from the visual FX side of the design for games course i have always been into films and CG element side. In fact during the summer a few of the BA film students such as Aden Barwick and Rob Marshall and I will be working together as a little production company making short films with some elements of CG and prop FX. This will be good to build up a portfolio also i have known Aden Barwick for around 10 years and am quite comfortable with his film style and his technique. I think form now I will mainly stay of the FX side of films.

production of film

For the production of my film i was originally going to just film it with  Canon 650d but i thought that it would be a good idea to convey my point of view on the bike so i also used a GoPro hero 1 and attached it to my helmet. With this method of filming i had to look up different way on positioning the camera. After i had the position of the camera sorted i had to do some test on the angle of the camera to make sure it wasnt just filming the sky or the ground and that everything i wanted was in shot. There was a couple of failed attempts were the GoPro was way to low and was just filming the front of my bike. Once this was adjusted i took a ride around Plymouth for a couple of hours getting some footage of bikers giving the nod and not just ignoring me. When this was done i then had to skim through all the footage to pick out the good shots, from there i just kept narrowing down the shots until there was only about 2-3  shots left.

The software i used to edit my film was adobe premiere pro. I had never edited film before but i chose to use premiere because it came highly recommend and im used to using other adobe softwares like illustrator and photoshop, this helped because i knew the basic layout and symbols in premiere. After i had finished editing my film i had a real problem with the audio. I had know idea if i was going to narrate over the film or have a fast or slow song in the back ground. But in the end i just chose a slow tempo song to have over my original audio.

Motorcycle - As The Rush Comes. Is the name of the song i chose to use in my film.

introduction to film

in the first lesson we watched a film called The Filth And The Fury, witch was a punk film about the life of the Sex Pistols. The documentary had lots of raw footage from their gigs and sets with cutaways to the band members in the present day in interviews.

The film was shot i various ways ranging from archive footage to points of view and present day shots.
Following this we were then showed to use a super 8 camera with tutorials on film, aspect ratio and frame rates. I found this very interesting because i have a passion for films and making movies and to have lessons on how to use these different types of cameras was a great experience.
In the lessons we learnt about progression of quality in film and TV, the picture below shows the aspect ratios of HD TV. After this there is 2K witch has a resolution of 2048x1080, and then there is 4k with an aspect ratio of 4096x2160 these images are unbelievably sharp.

research for film

from the get go i really wanted to make a short film demonstrating how most peoples perceptions of motorcyclist are wrong. The stereotype of bikers nowadays are that they are all aggressive and road hogs etc. But in my short film i would like to show examples of how polite bikers can by introducing the audience to the biker nod, this is when you drive past a another motorcyclist and out of respect they give you a little nod for choosing to ride a motorcycle and then you will nod back to show your appreciation. bikes are not easy to learn how to ride because of how powerful they can be.

In my film i will use a clip of a motorcyclist helping and elderly man up after he just fell over. in the video you dont see any people in there cars get out and help out.

Brand new bike crash after biker tries to show off

I will only try and use one or two of the clips in my film because of time( i dont want a long video)
and these videos are mainly for research.

Need to get shots
  •  Show my bike
  •  Talk about how long I’ve been a rider
  •   Show the good and the bad riders
  •  Pov rides from me and maybe Dyer together (talk about Dyer)
  • Shots with 650d next to me from in and outside  Fayes car from Aden or Rob
  • Narrate over YouTube clip chosen
  •  Finish short film by driving in line with fayes car and fade out

Techniques I need to learn this week

·      Colour correction
·      Fix camera shake from gopro premiere effect pannel
·      Find good music to use on top of footage
·      Ask Aden if I can use his gopro and ask him to show the best ways to mount gopro
Aim to have film around 2.30 ish
